One day, you too, will mother.
You will hold tiny hands and soothe soft wails,
you will answer hard questions
like, “why do fireflies light up?”
and “is heaven real?”
You will take them to the movies on a school day,
and hold them close during their first real heartbreak.
You will cheer wildly from the sidelines
while holding your breath because you know
courage often goes hand in hand
with failure, and yet,
they must learn to be brave.
Yes,
someday, you too, will mother
because in the village that is women,
we know
whether they came from our body or not, the children are all of ours, every one of them forever, always.
