About
The Collection
Our lives are never lived in a vacuum; they are always a reflection of the people and relationships that make us who we are. “It Takes a Village” is a four-part series of paintings and poetry that tells the story of community. Stories of sisterhood and unlikely friends, of mothering and the people we choose to grow old with. These are the stories of our villages.

The Poem
Sisterhood
It’s a thousand moments
over a hundred different
lifetimes, love–loss–girlhood
lived and relived
together
like an unspoken promise between us;
to bear witness to both the heartache and laughter
to share both our dreams and our tears.
You see, sisterhood is knowing
in this one wild life we are given,
you will not have to live it alone.

The Poem
Unlikely Friends
There is something uniquely beautiful,
when two souls,
more different than similar,
more curious than afraid,
move towards each other,
towards the unexpected,
and choose to love what’s unfamiliar
for the simple pleasure
of friendship.
- Andrea Jacobsen Poetry

The Poem
To Those Who Mother
One day, you too, will mother.
You will hold tiny hands and soothe soft wails,
you will answer hard questions
like, “why do fireflies light up?”
and “is heaven real?”
You will take them to the movies on a school day,
and hold them close during their first real heartbreak.
You will cheer wildly from the sidelines
while holding your breath because you know
courage often goes hand in hand
with failure, and yet,
they must learn to be brave.
Yes,
someday, you too, will mother
because in the village that is women,
we know
whether they came from our body or not,
the children are all of ours,
every one of them
forever,
always.
- Andrea Jacobsen Poetry

The Poem
Through the Decades
It’s summer camp nights and friendship bracelets, it’s the whispers of a first crush and the girls weekends where
magic and mystery and spilled secrets
find refuge.
It’s the chasing of big dreams
and the confessing of who
you really are beneath
all the costumes and masks and layers,
only to be wrapped around with those
beautifully kind words,
“I know” and “me too.”
It’s the talking of growing old together,
and more importantly,
the knowing that you mean it.
It’s the walking together through every season,
both the golden and the thunderous,
a life lived in decades,
a friendship lived in moments,
but most importantly
a vow;
to witness each other’s footprints
both in this life
and the next.
- Andrea Jacobsen Poetry

A Note
from the Artist
Thank you for taking the time to experience this beautiful collection about community. I am an artist, greatly in part, because this village has held me together both behind closed doors and across the world through social media. Our dreams, who we are, and the people we become are always a reflection of the village that comes alongside us on the journey. Thank you for being a part of my village.
