About

The Story

This past spring, I took almost 2 months away from sharing my work online to rediscover my love of creating art. No cameras, no social media, just me and the materials. During this time away, I was prompted by my art consultant to make 40-50 drawings of animals using materials I couldn't fully control (water and charcoal). By the 12th drawing, I almost quit out of boredom. But a small voice in the back of my mind said, "You might as well try something different on the 13th," and something magical happened... The spark of curiosity came back.

I selected six of the 45 drawings I created to share with the world. Within them are a "Series A" and a "Series B," each capturing a unique theme that emerged during the creative process.

Series A

The 1st three drawings have a childlike playfulness to them. The blacks are rich and the lines are heavy. There is a simplicity in the shades similar to how children view the world with rights and wrongs and very little in between. This, I believe, is partly why love and forgiveness come more easily to children, and in turn, they experience a playful joy we often miss out on.

Series B

The 2nd three drawings have a refined softness. The lines are much less comital, yet precise, the values live more in the grays than in the blacks and whites. These feel mature, almost grown. It reminds me of the person who has walked through the valleys of life, and despite the grief often carried, let the journey soften their edges. They are no stranger to tears, and because of this, they experience a depth of beauty most can't understand.

Before You Go...

I would love to hear from you! Leave me a note about your story and experience with “The Sabbatical Series.”
All my love,
Andrea
