My 100 Dresses

A 100 painting & poetry series of women in dresses.

MY 100 DRESSES

An Intro

Hello friend! My name is Andrea Jacobsen and I am an artist painting 100 women in dresses inspired by a beloved children’s book! I also write narrative poetry for each painting because I believe art is meant for your eyes and your soul. The artwork and writing are woven together with stunning photography and then released as beautiful online experiences, each chapter telling a different story about the feminine experience. I hope this series leaves you feeling inspired, brave, and empowered to take up space in your own beautiful story.

Xo,

Andrea

Chapter 1

Naive Confidence

Paintings 1-16, Jan-June 2023

Naive Confidence

Painted in my living room, these 16 paintings and poems will forever hold a tender place in my heart. It is these paintings that launched my art career, brought thousands of women together from all over the world, and started a journey more beautiful and wild than I ever thought possible.

How it all began…

As a little girl, I was fascinated by beautiful women and fabulous dresses, so you can imagine my excitement to read a book about a hundred of them!

The One Hundred Dresses, written by Eleanor Estes, beautifully teaches children about the damage of bullying, the sneaky ways we make our neighbor “the outsider,” and finally, how love and creativity have the power to dismantle hate.

There was just one problem; the book did not have pictures of the 100 dresses…

and for the romantic child I was,

this was devastating.

Fast forward to December, 2022, and I find myself a fine artist painting women in dresses.

Sitting on my couch one morning, I asked God what I was to do with these paintings. A passing memory lulled into my mind of a children’s book with dresses and how I had so wished there were pictures of those dresses. And suddenly, looking down at my hands, a curious whisper asked,

“What if you painted all 100 of them?”

the Artist

a quick note from the artist…

Although this series is of women in dresses, the heart of the work is more about seeing the world through the feminine and less about the subject matter. It is a way of experiencing our every day like a garden; overflowing with abundance and luxury, pruned with purpose and toil. This perfectly balanced contrast, I believe, is the true mystery of the feminine experience.
